Xylo Bikes - Rigorously Tested for Safety and Durability

Xylo bikes undergo rigorous safety testing to ensure they can withstand the forces experienced during real-world riding. Xylo frames meet the requirements of the EN-ISO 4210 standard. Two key tests used to evaluate their structural integrity are vertical force testing and horizontal force testing.

Frame Fatigue Testing with Vertical Forces

Vertical Force Testing (Load-Bearing Strength)

  • This test simulates the impact and weight the bicycle frame must endure when a rider is seated, pedaling, or landing from a jump.
  • A significant downward force is applied to the frame, particularly at key stress points like the seat tube, bottom bracket, and fork.
  • The goal is to ensure that the wooden frame can support the rider’s weight and absorb shocks from uneven terrain without cracking or deforming.
  • Wood’s natural flexibility helps distribute these forces, making it highly effective in absorbing vibrations and shocks.
  • Our Xylo frames underwent testing with a downward force, F1, of 1200 Newtons applied, for 120000 test cycles.

Frame Fatigue Testing with Horizontal Forces
Horizontal Force Testing (Lateral Stability & Impact Resistance)

  • This test evaluates how the bicycle handles side forces, such as those encountered when turning, leaning into corners, or experiencing lateral impacts (e.g., hitting a curb or sudden side pressure).
  • A controlled force is applied to the frame’s side, particularly at connection points like the head tube and rear triangle.
  • This ensures that the frame remains stable and does not twist or warp under lateral stress, which is crucial for maintaining control and balance during rides.
  • The laminated wood structure, reinforced with advanced joinery and treatments, enhances the frame’s lateral strength.
  • Our Xylo frames underwent testing with a forward force, F2, of 1200 Newtons applied, and with a rearward force, F3, of 600 Newtons applied.

Why These Tests Matter

  • They confirm that a wooden bicycle can meet or exceed the same safety standards as metal or carbon fiber frames.
  • They help identify areas for reinforcement, ensuring long-term durability.
  • They provide riders with confidence in the strength, stability, and reliability of their wooden bike.

By passing these tests, a Xylo Bike proves itself as not just an artistic or eco-friendly alternative but a fully functional, high-performance ride.
